Simeon and Anna
January 05, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 2:21-38
We love the Christmas story and its various familiar elements. However there is one part of the story that happens only eight days after Jesus' birth that is rarely discussed. Likely because it deals with the hard part of Christmas, the costly element of salvation. That this child will be, "appointed for the rise and fall of many in Israel, and for a sign that
is opposed."
In My Father's House
January 12, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 2:39-52
Luke has showed us through the testimonies of Zacheriah and Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, Simeon and Anna just exactly who this child is and why He has come. Now that same testimony will come from the mouth of twelve-year-old Jesus. In the only episode we have from Jesus' childhood, Luke reiterates to his readers that this child is in fact the Son of God.
The Ministry Of John The Baptist
January 19, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 3:1-9
John begins his ministry at precisely the time God had planned for him to. He begins to preach at a time when the nation of Israel was in a mess politically and spiritually. His calling is to prepare the way for the Lord, to make His paths straight. How he does that is by proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
What Then Shall We Do
January 26, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 3:10-14
People come from all over to hear this wild man in the wilderness. They are drawn not to him but to his message of repentance and their response is, "what then shall we do?" Repentance is not just being sorry for what we have done, genuine repentance will show up in the evidence of a changed life.

The Message And The Messenger
February 02, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 3:15-20
John's sudden appearance on the scene and the manner in which he preached caused people to think this could be the Messiah. John addresses that head on by saying, "I baptize you with water but there is one
coming after me who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire." It is the message and not the messenger.
You Are My Beloved Son
February 09, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 3:21-38
The baptism of Jesus heralds the beginning of His ministry. While He has no need for baptism, Jesus submits because God
commanded it and also to identify with those He came to save. Luke brings this to the forefront in the way he places the
genealogy of Jesus immediately after His baptism and right before His temptation. He links Jesus then not only to the children of Abraham but to the entire human race, precisely who He came to save.
The Temptation Of The Christ
February 16, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 4:1-13
After Jesus is baptized in the Jordan He is immediately led into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan himself. If Satan can somehow tempt Jesus to sin thereby compromising His perfect righteousness, then Jesus has lost His power to save us from the fall and the devil wins. The stakes couldn't be any higher. Can He succeed where Adam failed? Can He reverse the curse? We'll see that the answer is emphatically, yes.
The Temptation Of The Christ - Part 2
February 23, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 4:1-13
Satan's relentless barrage of temptations culminates in an attempt to twist the word of God to mean something it does not mean. And in doing so to try and get Jesus to test His heavenly Father. All of Satan's attacks here seek to do one thing and that is to drive a wedge between the Son and the Father. It is how he will tempt us today. However, Jesus
models for us the way to guard against that is a solid reliance on and knowledge of the truths of God's Word.

Jesus' Authority Over Demons
March 09, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 4:31-37
Having firmly established the identity of Jesus as the Messiah, Luke now begins to show Him in all His power and authority. In order to deliver us from the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light, He must first have authority over demons. In a face off with a demon possessed man at the synagogue in Capernaum, we see there that in fact, He does.
Jesus' Authority To Heal
March 16, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 4:39-44
Having healed Peter's mother-in-law of a high fever word gets out and the whole town comes out bringing their sick and afflicted.
Jesus heals them all. Afterwards the towns people want to keep Jesus there for themselves, but He must go and preach the kingdom of God in other towns. While the miracles and healing of Jesus are fascinating and a vital part of HIs ministry, His sole purpose is to preach the good news of Gods Kingdom. Jesus is not meant to keep to ourselves. He is glorified when the good News is proclaimed.
From Fish To Men
March 23, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 5:1-11
When the huge catch of fish comes into the boat, Peter recognizes His own sinfulness and Jesus' authority over everything, including his heart. Jesus then puts him into fulltime service no longer catching fish but catching men. When we recognize that Jesus has authority over every part of us then we begin to be the committed followers of Jesus He has called us to be.
Of Lepers And Sinners
March 30, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 5:12-16
News of Jesus authority to heal reaches the most desperate of people, the leper. Living in isolation, in suffering, with no hope of healing he seeks out Jesus. And in an enormous display of compassion Jesus heals him; giving him new life. It is the same for the outcast diseased sinner. Living in isolation from God, dealing with the ravages of sin on our lives,
with no hope of healing ourselves, we find Jesus and he reaches out and heals us and gives us new life.

Jesus' Authority To Forgive Sin
April 06, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 5:17-26
Jesus has been healing people everywhere he goes but when the paralytic man is lowered through the roof, shockingly Jesus first forgives his sin. At the heart of the gospel is our need to be forgiven. Our physical condition
is secondary to the state of our souls. Jesus heals, yes, but His purpose in the incarnation was to seek and save those who are lost.
A Psalm Of The Cross
April 13, 2025
Patrick Waller
Psalm 22
Psalm 22 might not be the first place you would go to read of the cross of Christ. But David gives us there the most graphic description of the cross in all of scripture. He may have been writing out of his immense suffering but the Psalm would find its ultimate fulfillment in Christ. God through David was writing about the substitutionary death of Christ whereby we may believe and be saved.
Resurrection And Life
April 20, 2025
Patrick Waller
Mark 16:1-8, 1 Corinthians 15
Jesus' resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian belief. It is what proves for all time that Jesus has authority over death. Since then, Christ is raised we also will be raised in the last day. Death is the penalty for sin, it is the last enemy we all must face but as Paul says "death is swallowed up in victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Not The Righteous But Sinners
April 27, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 5:27-32
Jesus did not come for good people. He came to call sinners to repentance. Matthew was perhaps the most vile despised man in Capernaum and Jesus comes to him and says, "Follow me" It's the same call he
issues to us. And our only response should be like Matthew to leave it all, to follow, and introduce as many people as we can to the savior.

A Question About Fasting
May 04, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 5:33-39
The Pharisees confront Jesus on why His disciples don't fast like they do. When the bridegroom is with them Jesus says, there is no need. The Pharisees were clinging to their self imposed traditions thinking it promoted
righteousness. When Jesus is saying to them, I am the bridegroom and what I am bringing is new. It cannot be added to or placed on top of your old religious traditions. New wine cannot be held in old wineskins.
A Virtuous Mother
May 11, 2025
Patrick Waller
1 Samuel 1
Of all the mothers in the bible Hannah stands out because of her persistent prayer for a child that she vows to return to the Lord in His service. Her determination is rewarded in a baby named Samuel. But if we simply see Hannah as a prayer warrior we have missed the full story. God is working His sovereign plan to turn a nation back to Him through this child who will one day be the prophet of Israel.
Lord Of The Sabbath
May 18, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:1-11
The Sabbath is a gift from God for His people. The Pharisees had turned it into an oppressive day with all their man made laws and traditions. Jesus reminds them here that He is Lord of the Sabbath. As Christians we follow what God has laid out for us in scripture regarding the Sabbath and not what the culture or even tradition might dictate to us.
Jesus Chooses The Twelve
May 25, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:12-13
The conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders is reaching a fever pitch. It is time for Him to choose the ones who will carry the message of the gospel to the rest of the world after His ascension. No one would have chosen these ordinary men for such a task. Yet Jesus chooses them not on the strength of who they are but what by His grace they will become.

Jesus Chooses The Twelve Part 2
June 1, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:14
God delights in using the ordinary for the extraordinary. These twelve men were as ordinary and unqualified as you can imagine.
Yet they did amazing things for the kingdom of God because they placed no limits on their availability and obedience to the Lord.
Jesus Chooses The Twelve - Peter
June 8, 2025
Patrick Waller
Matthew 16:13-23, Luke 6:14
When Jesus calls Peter he is rough around the edges. If he is to be "the rock" then there are lessons Peter has to learn in order to be all
Jesus needs him to be. It is a tough painful process but as Jesus takes this rough, vacillating, brash, bold, hotheaded individual from Simon the fisherman to Peter the apostle we recognize that this is actually what Jesus desires to do in all of us. To shape us into a vessel for God's glory.
A Father's Love
June 15, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 15: 11-24
The prodigal son is perhaps the most recognizable of all Jesus parables. The main character, however, is in fact the father. He
responds to his son in ways that defy our expectations. His love for him is a picture of the father's love for repentant sinners.
God demonstrated this love for us in the cross of Christ.
Magnifying God
June 22, 2025
Patrick Waller
Psalm 34:1-3
As the disciples walked with Jesus for three and a half years, they were constantly learning from Him. A lot of things we understand about God we take for granted because its on the pages of scripture but these guys are learning it in real time as they walk daily with the Son of God. What are the things you are learning about the Lord as you walk with Him daily?
Jesus Chooses The Twelve - Andrew
June 29, 2025
Patrick Waller
John 1:35-42, Luke 6:14
Of the inner circle of Jesus disciples Peter's brother Andrew is perhaps the least well known. While he is among some large personalities like Peter James and John he is never out front or in the spotlight. Andrew
is content to be behind the scenes quietly consistently bringing people to Jesus. While we may not be called to be in the spotlight, we are certainly called to consistently bring people to Jesus.

Jesus Chooses The Twelve - James And John
July 6, 2025
Patrick Waller
Mark 10:35-45, Luke 6:14
The "Sons of Thunder" get their nick name honestly. They ask to call down fire and consume a Samaritan village, they argue
about who's the greatest, they vie for a spot in the kingdom to the right and left of Jesus. As bombastic, selfish, zealous and passionate as James and John are Jesus has to teach them to balance zeal with restraint and truth with love.
Jesus Chooses The Twelve - Philip
July 13, 2025
Patrick Waller
John 1:43-46, Luke 6:14
Philip is the fifth disciple mentioned in Luke 6. We know little about him but what we do know tells us that he was looking for the Messiah and when he found him he immediately went and told his best friend. Philip was Jesus witness, His representative and he represented him all the way to the end.
Jesus Chooses The Twelve - Nathanael
July 20, 2025
Patrick Waller
John 1:43-51, Luke 6:14
"Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" While there may have been some initial prejudices in his heart, when Natanaael met Jesus he knew Him and Jesus knew Nathanael. Because Nathanael knew His bible and had been searching and looking for the Messiah. When Christ returns and you meet Him face to face will you know Him? And will He know you? Are you searching the scriptures like Nathanael eager for His appearing?
Jesus Chooses The Twelve - Matthew & Thomas
July 27, 2025
Patrick Waller
Matthew 9:9-13, John 20:24-29, Luke 6:15
As tax collector Matthew was perhaps the most hated individual in town. So when Jesus shows up at his tax booth and says, "follow me," he finds the redemption he has no doubt longed for and he follows. Thomas on the other hand is remembered as a pessimistic doubter. He proves however that the nickname doubting Thomas that history has given him is not the whole of his character. His deepest desire was simply to be with his Lord.
August
Jesus Chooses The Twelve - James The Less & Simon The Zealot
August 3, 2025
Patrick Waller
John 6:60-71, Luke 6:15
All we know about James and Simon are their names. There is no record of their calling and after Acts 5 we lose all record of them in scripture. Yet their names will be on the gates of the new Jerusalem. It doesn't matter that we know nothing about their ministries, their lives were transformed by Jesus and their names forever written in the Lambs Book
of Life. Can we say the same of our lives and names?
Jesus Chooses The Twelve - Judas Son Of James & Judas Iscariot
August 10, 2025
Patrick Waller
John 14:18-24, John 13:21-30, Luke 6:15
A tale of two Judases. One who loved the Lord, who obeyed His commands and gave his very life to the Savior. And the other who in the end chose his own way, the path of destruction. The former is an encouragement to us, the latter is a warning to us that is is entirely possible to be so close to Christ and yet grow colder and more calloused against Him. Which will you be?

The Multitudes Come
August 24, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:17-19
As the multitudes come to Jesus, He proves that what is regular for Him is all together irregular for us. We need a Savior who speaks nothing but truth and life. One who heals every infirmity and one who is victorious against the forces of darkness. He could have done anything to prove He was the Son of God, but He chose to heal us, to rid us of demonic
possession and ultimately to go to the cross in our place.
The Beatitudes
August 31, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:20-26
If you were describing a blessed life it would hardly involve being poor, hungry, weeping and hated. Yet that is precisely the way Jesus
describes it in the sermon on the mount. The follower of Christ is called to be different from the world. This sermon then is not a
prescription for a better life. It is a description of the actual life of a true follower of Christ.

The Beatitudes Part 2
September 7, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:20-26
The beatitude teaching of Jesus seems upside down from a worldly perspective. But from a kingdom perspective it actually sets the world right side up. When we live this way it'll be in opposition to the world, it'll hate you and speak evil against you. But this is part and parcel to living a blessed life in Christ. And Jesus says woe to the ones who would choose otherwise.
Love Your Enemies
September 14, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:27-28
As Jesus begins the sermon on the mount He is drawing a distinction between followers of the world and the followers of Christ. If we follow Him, we will walk differently from the world. One of the distinguishing marks is
our love. Love not just for those that love us back but love for our enemies, the ones who hate us.
A Different Love
September 21, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:29-36
There is a reciprocal kind of love that the world is used to. If it benefits them they are fine with it. Jesus says if you love that way, big deal, so do sinners. There has to be a distinction between how we love and how
the world loves. The kind of love Jesus is calling us to is the kind that loves without expecting anything in return. To show kindness even to the ungrateful and evil.
The Measure You Use
September 28, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:37-42
If we are in fact Sons of the Most High then we will bear His image. The area where that image gets tarnished many times is in our hastiness to judge and condemn others. Jesus reminds His listeners that as His followers we should not judge and condemn but forgive and give. When we do, we bear out His mercy towards us. And that becomes the
measure we use with others.

Fruits And Foundations
October 19, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 6:43-49
Jesus closes the sermon on the mount with two very familiar illustrations that will determine if you are following Him or not. If you are bearing fruit and if your house has a foundation on the rock. Jesus is dealing here with the reality of heaven or hell, the eternal destination of our souls. If we call Him Lord we will do what He says. If not, our house has no foundation and when the storm of His judgement falls so will our house and the ruin will be great.
The Centurion And His Servant
October 26, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 7:1-10
Jesus sermon on the mount in Luke 6 has been about the characteristics of Christian discipleship, what it looks like to be a true follower of Jesus. And now in Luke 7 immediately following that, we meet the prime example of those characteristics in this centurion. Compassion, generosity, love, humility and a faith that astonishes Jesus.

The Widow Of Nain
November 2, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 7:11-17
This precious widow is on her way to bury her only son, Jesus raises him back to life. It is a reminder for us of His power over death but also of the Lords compassion to come to us in the midst of our grief and sadness and restore life. Exactly what He will do when the dead in Christ rise again as He descends from heaven with a cry of command.
Doubting John
November 9, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 7:18-23
It seems as though Jesus ministry was not shaping up like John though it should and it caused him then to doubt. We tend to do the same. When things don't turn out the way we think they should, when Jesus doesn't respond according to our standards we begin to question. And all the while Jesus is saying to us, "I'm doing precisely what I'm supposed to be doing. Blessed are those who don't fall away on account of me."
John The Prophet, Jesus The Messiah
November 16, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 7:24-35
Jesus message to the crowd is essentially you can't have accepted John and not now accept the one he was pointing to. When we come to hear the truth, we are then to act on that truth and follow through on our convictions regarding it. Jesus says, "you went to see a prophet. Well, the prophet spoke of the Messiah. He is here now, what will you do with Him?"
She Who Loved Much
November 23, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 7:36-50
Jesus uses the gracious loving actions of this woman to expose the pious unregenerate heart of Simon. He saw only a sinful woman of the city but Jesus saw a transformed soul that had her many sins forgiven by the Savior.
Because of that she loved much. When Christ saves us our longing should be to love Him much before a watching world simply because we have been forgiven much. It is only Jesus who can forgive our sins.
The Sower And The Soils
November 30, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 8:1-15
Perhaps one of the most recognizable parables Jesus told is the parable of the soils. The question though is why does Jesus tell this story here. At this point there are massive crowds following Him.
So, what Jesus begins doing is separating out the casual listener from the true follower. And He illustrates that masterfully with this simple story of a sower who sowed some seeds.

Careful How You Listen
December 7, 2025
Patrick Waller
Luke 8:16-21
The parable of the soils is all about how we hear the word of God and whether it falls on good soil or not. For those who are the good soil, as the word bears fruit they will become lights in the world. Being careful to listen means that we hold fast what we have. Not only to listen but to obey what we have heard.
What Christmas Means
December 14, 2025
Patrick Waller
Matthew 1:18-25
For many, the story of Christmas is so far removed that the true meaning is simply lost on them. But what is actually happening is that God is speaking directly to us in the baby Jesus answering the longings of the human
heart. If people are trying to figure out what all this means, what this life is about look no further than the manger in Bethlehem.

Matthew Chapters 1 & 2
There are over 300 prophecies in the Old Testament that are fulfilled in Jesus. Promises made by God through the prophets regarding Jesus' birth, life, death, burial and resurrection made hundreds of years before that first Christmas. In Matthew 1 and 2 he gives us five of them as if to say when God makes a promise, He will keep it and the baby in Bethlehem proves it.
God Comforts His People

Patrick Waller
Isaiah 40:1-5
The angelic message to the shepherds was one of comfort and joy, that a savior had been born. God had been silent for 400 years and people were no doubt wondering if they would ever hear from God again. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that in our distresses we may think God has forgotten but at just the right time, His time, He comes into our wilderness with His comfort and joy.
